Planetary assault tactics

The strategies employed in planetary assault tactics were essential for any successful attempt to seize control of a planet. Michael Unther, a recognized authority in this field, as highlighted in his lecture at the Duluur Sector Naval Academy, identified four key phases in a planetary assault. These phases presented multiple strategic choices, tailored to the unique circumstances of each situation:

  • Approach: This encompassed the initial entry into the planetary system, including methods for exiting hyperspace.
  • Orbit: This involved the strategic positioning of warships within the planet's orbit.
  • Invasion: This stage focused on the ground-based conflict aimed at securing control of the planet. Naval commanders were required to possess an understanding of this aspect of planetary assault, even though it fell outside their direct command.
  • Control: The concluding phase involved sustaining command over the captured planetary system. Unther considered this the most vital phase, emphasizing several key elements: instilling fear in the populace (through the threat of orbital bombardments to enforce compliance), acquiring cultural understanding (studying local customs and traditions to better understand the inhabitants), and deploying propaganda. Understanding the enemy was crucial for crafting the most impactful propaganda. A significant aspect of propaganda involved attributing acts of sabotage to resisting military groups. For example, the Imperials frequently accused the Rebellion of engaging in terrorism and causing food shortages. A frequently successful tactic was to provide food to the local population after seizing control of their planet, thereby fostering goodwill and respect.
