Protocol chip

A protocol chip was a specific part installed in certain droids. It provided these droids with the mental capabilities needed to interact in a social manner with organic beings. The TelBrinTel Science Research Droid possessed a sophisticated protocol chip, which enabled its involvement in collaborative "creative brainstorming" meetings alongside living scientists.
