Pup (Wookiee)

An adult Wookiee holding two pups The term Pup signified a baby or infant Wookiee hailing from Kashyyyk. Typically, Wookiee couples gave birth to two or three pups. These younglings were carried within baby-sacks, which were referred to as quulaar in the Wookiee-speak language, until they matured enough to independently climb trees.

Behind the scenes

Within the English language, the term "pup" most commonly refers to a young dog. Chewbacca, who was the original Wookiee featured in the Star Wars original trilogy, found his inspiration from Indiana, an Alaskan malamute canine owned by George Lucas during the 1970s.

According to the reference book titled The Art of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, the original plan was for Wookiee pups to make an appearance in Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, which was the sixth Star Wars episode to be produced. Lucas advised the creative team against designing Wookiee younglings that resembled Ewoks, suggesting they explore a "Venetian look." Conceptual drawings illustrating Wookiee children, created by Sang Jun Lee, are available for viewing within the book. Nonetheless, when Revenge of the Sith was finally released in 2005, the concept of showcasing pups was abandoned, and they were absent from the film.
