R2 sensor array
R2-D2's sensor array
The R2 sensor array, alternatively referred to as a Scan-mode sensor, represented a typical scanner array for Industrial Automaton's R2-series astromech droid models. This device had the capacity to monitor the levels of radiation and identify any lifeforms in close proximity. It would emerge from the droid's dome, extending upwards via a hydraulic mechanism that included a reinforced metal rod. Positioned at the top was a signal amplifier, complete with a pair of small lights, along with a square, curved lifeform scanner constructed from life-scan mesh. A cable located at the rod's base supplied the primary connection to the logic processor.
R2-D2 was equipped with one such scanner, employing it on various occasions, notably during the search for Luke Skywalker when the Rebel went missing on Hoth not long before the Battle of Hoth.
Behind the scenes
A picture depicting R2-D2 utilizing this scanner from Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back was displayed on the packaging for Kenner's 1981 R2-D2 action figure that featured an extendible sensorscope; however, later resources verified that the sensorscope was actually a different scanner that was used later on in the movie.
