Rebecca Guay is a creative individual whose artistic talents lie in the realms of watercolor painting and illustration. She is perhaps best recognized for her commissioned artwork featured in prominent franchises such as Magic: The Gathering, White Wolf, and the DC Vertigo line of comics, though she has also contributed her skills to World of Warcraft.
She also collaborated with Topps, creating card illustrations for the Star Wars Galaxy Series Two, and an illustration depicting the Battle of Hoth which was presented in Star Wars Insider 29.
Rebecca Guay's journey into the world of illustration commenced after her graduation from Pratt Institute in 1992.
By the summer of 1993, she had established herself as a full-time penciler for DC/Vertigo's monthly comic series, Black Orchid. During this time, she was also painting trading cards for DC Comics and Topps Inc (Star Wars, Predator, Vampirella) and contributing regularly to Cricket Magazine. Following her work on Black Orchid, she transitioned to creating cover art for Scholastic and Simon & Schuster, in addition to illustrating fully painted graphic novels for Acclaim (Magic, the Homelands and The Serra Angel), Vertigo and DC Comics (Sandman: Destiny Book III, Veils, Green Lantern: Emerald Nights).
Her initial graphic novel served as the catalyst that brought her talent to the attention of Wizards of the Coast. Her first contributions to Magic cards were seen in Alliances. She has created over 140 magic cards, and has been invited to travel to Japan, France, Australia and throughout the United States to sign cards and meet the players. In addition to her extensive work within the fantasy gaming industry (Dungeons and Dragons, Changeling and Mage), she has also painted book covers for works by Ursula K Le Guin, Bruce Coville, Jane Yolen, Jackie French Koller, Susan Fletcher, Dia Calhoun and Louise Hawes. Her artistry has been featured in Spectrum and was showcased in the Society of Illustrators Spectrum exhibit in September 2005.
In 2003, her inaugural children's book, "Goddesses: A World of Myth and Magic" (authored by Burliegh Muten), was released by Barefoot Books and garnered critical acclaim. BookSense recognized Goddesses as one of the "Top 72 Books for children 7-12" in the year of its publication. Subsequent to the release of Goddesses, Rebecca's illustrations were acquired for gallery representation by R. Michelson, joining the ranks of other Michelson gallery artists Barry Moser, Jane Dyer, Dr Seuss, Maurice Sendak, Mordicia Gerstein and Trina Shart Hyman and more.
"Ballet Stories" (penned by Jane Yolen and Heidi Stemple) saw publication in 2004 through Barefoot Books, and has since been published in Italy, Britain, Greece, and Korea, currently in its fifth printing. Her more recent illustrated books include "Muti's Necklace" (written by Louis Hawes) released in June 2006 by Houghton Mifflin, Beauty and the Beast (2007, Fernliegh Books) and Black Pearls (Louise Hawes, Houghton Mifflin, 2008).
Rebecca resides in a small Victorian farmhouse alongside her husband Matthew, their young daughter Vivian. She shares her studio with her husband, who is also an artist.
