The Rebel stinger fighter originated as a vehicle concept intended for inclusion in The Epic Continues, a planned expansion of Kenner's Star Wars toy series that was eventually shelved. While a presentation binder for the toy line referenced the vehicle without providing a visual representation, a sketch of it later appeared in the Hasbro Design Sketchbook Volume 2 from 2009, accompanied by a description identifying it as "A one man minimal space fighter."
