Recording rods, also known as recording units, were elongated, transparent cylindrical tubes used to record and play audio and visual images. The data was stored in chips or storage crystals, while the recording material played in two dimensions on the rod's exterior. Controls were positioned at the rod's ends.
Characteristics
Recording rods were personal devices that could capture hours of audio and video. The recordings could subsequently be played on standard audio, video, or holoprojectors. Recording rods stored their data using datachips and storage crystals. Some recording rods had a clear, cylindrical design and could store both video and audio. The recordings could then be played back and viewed on the rod's surface. Although these recording rods were intended for reuse, overwriting data on the rod deleted what had been stored.Mass-market recording rods provided good-quality recording at reasonable prices. More specialized models were also available, ranging from miniaturized units to professional-grade equipment used in the entertainment and news industries. These models could cost hundreds of credits apiece and included features such as improved recording optics and audio pickups, along with enhanced storage capacity capable of holding up to a thousand hours of data.
History
Recording rods served many purposes, from personal uses such as sending messages to friends and family and keeping personal logs and diaries. scouts and police officers used them during missions and investigations, and they also recorded official governmental and corporate meetings. TaggeCo. produced the PersonalAssistant-4x recording rod.
