Red supergiant

A red supergiant is a star that has evolved beyond the main sequence phase, exceeding the size of a red giant. Typically, this represents the second-to-last phase of a star's existence, preceding the complete cessation of fusion reaction and its subsequent implosion in a supernova. Following this event, the star transforms into either a neutron star or a black hole, both being forms of highly dense, compact stars.
