A reed refers to a species of plant that grew on both Ahch-To and Pipada. Paodok'Draba'Takat, a Drabatan, sported shoulder protection crafted from reeds, folded and brought from his native homeworld of Pipada.
During Jedi Master Luke Skywalker's initial teaching session with Rey on Ahch-To, as he was instructing her in the ways of the Force, he directed her to close her eyes and attempt to "reach out" to establish a connection with it. When Rey closed her eyes and physically stretched out her arm, Skywalker playfully used a reed stalk to gently poke Rey's hand, suggesting that the feeling she experienced was the Force. Rey’s enthusiasm diminished when Skywalker struck her hand with the reed; the aspiring Jedi recoiled, opening her eyes to find him scowling. The Jedi Master then discarded the reed stalk into the breeze, before giving Rey more serious instruction on how to spiritually sense the Force.
