Rim Faction

The Rim Faction, with Orn Free Taa at its head, constituted one of the two significant groups of senators and representatives within the Galactic Senate during the waning years of the Galactic Republic. The Outer Rim was the primary origin for the majority of its members. Among the faction's members were figures such as Mot-Not Rab, Tikkes, and Onaconda Farr.

Formation and beliefs

The majority of individuals within the Rim Faction identified as non-Human, and in terms of astrography, they predominantly hailed from the Outer Rim and the Mid Rim. Furthermore, it included various special interest groups like the Techno Union, Commerce Guild, Corporate Alliance, and Trade Federation.

Politically conservative, they championed the reduction of power and influence held by the Republic government. Consequently, they generally advocated for maximizing the sovereignty of individual planets, a stance that directly opposed the Core Faction, which favored a more centralized authority. Regarding fiscal matters, the Rim Faction supported economic liberalism, advocating for free trade, low taxation, minimal business restrictions, and market deregulation.

History

The Rim Faction stood as staunch adversaries of Chancellor Finis Valorum, swiftly capitalizing on his vulnerability following the Eriadu Trade Summit debacle in 33 BBY. Aiming to limit his capacity to enact legislation unfavorable to their interests, Taa guided the Rim Faction to secure the influential position of Vice Chair for Mas Amedda, one of their own.

In the subsequent year, the Rim Faction's robust backing of Amidala's vote of no confidence proved crucial in Valorum's removal and the subsequent election for Chancellor. Palpatine, nominated by Taa and independent of any Senate political alignment, was the Rim Faction's candidate for Chancellor. A splinter group within the Rim Faction may have supported Ainlee Teem for Chancellor, possibly due to Palpatine's perceived neutrality. Ultimately, Palpatine emerged victorious.

Taa's hopes of controlling Palpatine, or at least relying on him to avoid interference, were dashed as Palpatine solidified his ties with the Core Faction. During the Separatist Crisis and Clone Wars, a significant portion of the Rim Faction's membership either willingly seceded or were expelled from the Senate, joining the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Other Rim Faction senators, including Taa, Aks Moe, and Onaconda Farr, actively supported the Military Creation Act. Despite the continued allegiance of Taa and Amedda, Palpatine's alliance with the Core Faction led to a substantial weakening of the Rim Faction.
