The SCM-22 stenographer, a droid manufactured initially by PowerPost during the early period of the New Republic, was designed for the purpose of recording and playing back important dialogues. Its peculiar design made the SCM-22 challenging to identify as a droid.

Although originally marketed to busy corporate executives who frequently traveled for business, the droid gained significant popularity among New Republic officers.
Its portability and secure encryption capabilities made the SCM-22, which could fit comfortably in a sentient being's palm, a widely adopted tool.
Despite its glossy black exterior suggesting it was merely an executive novelty item, the droid possessed more advanced capabilities. The SCM-22 was equipped with a pair of short legs featuring treaded wheels, enabling independent movement. Furthermore, it included a mini microphone receiver capable of recording voices from distances up to 15 meters. The droid's memory capacity allowed it to store approximately 170 hours of conversations before requiring a memory wipe.
Contained within its casing was a compact cognitive module that could distinguish between as many as five separate conversations. It also featured the capability to automatically remove extended periods of silence and ambient noise from recordings.
General Etahn A'baht frequently employed the SCM-22 during his service within the Koornacht Cluster and its surrounding areas. A'baht would often leverage the droid's limited intelligence and high-pitched vocabulator by uttering the command 'activate', prompting the SCM-22 to locate an optimal recording position, followed by 'record' to initiate the recording process.
Initially, PowerPost distributed the droid exclusively through authorized retailers. However, due to the New Republic's high demand for the SCM-22, the company was compelled to broaden its distribution network.
