Sentience
Various sentient species (and a droid)
Sentience referred to the capacity for a species to possess intelligent thought. Typically, this was judged by a creature's capacity for logical thought, verbal communication, and the skillful use of instruments. Those lacking these attributes entirely were deemed non-sentient, while those exhibiting initial stages of sentience were considered semi-sentient. Despite their artificial nature, droids were acknowledged as sentient beings.
Definition
As detailed in The Essential Guide to Alien Species, penned by Ann Margaret Lewis from information gathered by Senior Anthropologist Mammon Hoole, "a species is labeled as sentient when it demonstrates the capability to reason, grasp theoretical and symbolic concepts, create and employ tools, and interact through written or spoken language." Species lacking the ability to reason and relying solely on instinct were categorized as non-sentient, sometimes referred to as sub-sentient. The absence of sentience did not equate to a complete lack of intelligence. Semi-sentient was the classification for species displaying signs of emerging sentience. These species exhibited rudimentary skills in tool manipulation, language use, and/or problem-solving. Examples encompass creatures like the Arkanian dragon, the Zillo Beast, the Bafforr tree, the wampa, pecoppi parrots, and the sarlacc.
History
During the final years of the Galactic Republic, the Annual Mid-Rim Domesticated Sub-Sentient Show showcased non-sentient beings.
The Galactic Empire often reclassified sentient species, such as the Wookiees, as non-sentient to justify their enslavement without openly contravening laws designed to protect sentient beings from such exploitation.
Behind the scenes
Within Star Wars Legends, the concept of sentience merges the real-world notions of sentience and sapience.
