These shoni spears came from the sharp bills of the shoni swordfish, a unique species of backwards-swimming fish. The Kaleesh put them to use as resilient spears when hunting the mumuu, as they were among the select few armaments capable of penetrating the mumuu's thick outer layer. Shoni spears never exceeded two meters; therefore, Kalee hunters had to fight their quarry up close, which then developed into mumuu-fighting.
While the shoni spear was a practical tool for Kaleesh hunters, it also had symbolic weight. The relationship of the shoni and mumuu was seen by the Kalee natives as representing the struggle between sea and land, and also any form of conflict.
During the time of the Huk War, shoni spears were employed as instruments of war, after the Kaleesh realized they could effectively pierce the strong shells of Huk warriors.
