A snooper represented a type of software designed to capture data and transmit it to an external destination. Although rudimentary versions were simple to identify, advanced, altered versions possessed the capability to avoid being discovered. The youthful rebel supporter Merei Spanjaf procured such a snooper from the criminal organization known as the Gray Syndicate, located in Capital City on the world of Lothal. She subsequently deployed three snooper applications to penetrate both the Transportation Ministry's data repository and the broader Imperial network present on Lothal.
By utilizing these snoopers, Merei successfully uncovered the location of Zare Leonis' sibling, Dhara, a cadet enrolled at the Academy for Young Imperials who had been kidnapped and forcefully inducted into Project Harvester. While two of the snooper programs successfully erased their presence from the system, Merei's mother and father, Gandr and Jessa Spanjaf, were able to halt the third snooper and commence an investigation into the intrusion. Little did they know that their own daughter was the one responsible for the intrusion.
