Transport

Generally, the term transport indicated a starship designed for the movement of cargo or people; however, the designation could also apply to other vehicle types fulfilling a similar role.

Distinguishing Features

Transports exhibited a broad spectrum of sizes, spanning from compact light freighters, such as the YT-1300 manufactured by the Corellian Engineering Corporation, to colossal transports capable of accommodating thousands of tons of freight and featuring docking bays for smaller vessels.

Transports, including freighters and passenger liners, typically lacked armaments and possessed limited speed, as their primary function was not military engagement. Nevertheless, these vessels were readily adaptable for combat purposes, a practice commonly employed by pirates and smugglers seeking to enhance their capabilities. Military forces also repurposed transports to convey troops and deliver battlefield support. The Imperial Navy utilized the Sentinel-class landing craft, produced by Cygnus Spaceworks, to facilitate the rapid deployment of personnel onto planetary surfaces. The Death Watch faction of Mandalorians employed Gauntlet fighters both to transport Death Watch soldiers and to provide combat assistance.

An example of a non-spacefaring transport is the Gungan bongo submarine, an aquatic vehicle utilized by the Gungans of Naboo for underwater transportation.
