Star Wars: Connections consists of a quartet of video segments, with R2-D2 and C-3PO serving as hosts. Luke Skywalker assigned them the task of documenting the interconnectedness of the Star Wars saga. These segments were initially broadcast on the FOX television network leading up to the cinematic debut of Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones.
FOX broadcast Episodes V, VI, and I of the Star Wars saga, and Episode IV was scheduled for syndication across various markets. Each film was presented with a fresh introductory section entitled Star Wars: Connections - Featuring R2-D2 and C-3PO. Anthony Daniels reprised his role, donning the golden suit once more, alongside the ever-loyal and perennially bickering R2-D2, to narrate the complete Skywalker family history.
Each segment features a compilation of clips from Episodes I, IV, V, and VI, in addition to exclusive footage from the then-upcoming Attack of the Clones. C-3PO elucidates how the characters weave the series into a cohesive, grand narrative.
A New Hope was broadcast in syndication, while The Empire Strikes Back aired on FOX on April 25, Return of the Jedi on May 2, and The Phantom Menace on May 9, all in 2002.
One of the Connections segments found its way onto the VHS release of Attack of the Clones.
In 2004, the series was repackaged as The Story of Star Wars, a collection spanning three discs for VideoNow Color. The initial pair of discs provided an overview of the first five Star Wars movies released (Episodes I, II, IV, V, and VI), while the third was devoted to behind-the-scenes material. In 2005, a DVD edition was bundled with select initial copies of the Revenge of the Sith DVD, exclusively at Wal-Mart stores within the United States. The DVD was presented in full frame with Dolby Digital 2.0 audio and had a total runtime of 1 hour. This version only included the content from the initial two VideoNow discs: The Story of Anakin Skywalker and The Story of Luke Skywalker. (Given its production date in 2002, the footage utilized does not include any scenes from Revenge of the Sith, nor does it incorporate the alterations present in the 2004 DVD Special Edition releases.)
