Star Wars Kids (1997)


Featured on the cover of issue #9 is Lando Calrissian. Star Wars Kids was a periodical published by Scholastic spanning from July of 1997 until February of 1999. It was delivered directly to homes as a bonus accompanying subscriptions to Star Wars Missions, with a fresh edition released every month. In total, twenty editions were produced, with each one putting a spotlight on a specific character from the Original trilogy and a planet originating from either the movies or the Expanded Universe.

Brain Blasters

This was a quiz game, consisting of roughly fifteen questions, all pertaining to the Original trilogy and the Expanded Universe.

Star Wars Kids Talks To…

This segment featured an interview with an actor who played the featured character for that month, for example, Mark Hamill in the Luke Skywalker edition, Harrison Ford in the Han Solo edition, or David Prowse, James Earl Jones, and Sebastian Shaw in the Darth Vader edition.

Space Science

This section presented instructional content concerning actual space and then drew parallels to a place or object within the fictional Star Wars world.

Who Is That Alien?

This section provided two informational profiles concerning a particular alien species, as seen in either the films or the EU.

On Our Planet

This segment compared a climate found on Earth to one of the planets featured in the Star Wars universe.

Yoda's Puzzle Pages

This section included crosswords and word searches that all had a connection to the Star Wars universe.

Star Wars Missions Bonus Page

This page acted as a supplemental addition to the roleplaying game available in the Star Wars Missions scenario. To fully engage with this, the player needed the materials provided with the Star Wars Missions starter set.

A-Maze-Ing Universe

This was a maze for readers to navigate, and it usually tied into the featured planet for that month.

Comic

Each issue presented one-fifth of a complete, brief comic narrative. There were a total of four comic stories: The Rebel Thief, X-Wing Marks the Spot, Imperial Spy, and "Death Star Pirates." Additionally, there was a short comic titled The Gambler's Quest featured in Issue #12.
