The Super Star Destroyer prototype, a colossal warship, was conceived by the Galactic Empire following the conclusion of the Clone Wars as an integral component of the Sarlacc Project.
This immense dreadnought measured 12 kilometers in length, yet it did not represent the ultimate iteration of the intended SSD design. Internally, it housed a singular primary power core. The design specified that it would be equipped with a significant quantity of weaponry upon its final construction.
Designated under the codename Sarlacc Project, engineers stationed on Coruscant designed the vessel, while its construction took place in orbit around Byss. The ultimate purpose of the vessel was to function as the flagship for the Imperial Navy. However, it never reached completion, as a strike team comprising early rebels, pirates, and smugglers, assembled by the Alderaanian noble Lady Alya Aldrete, attacked and destroyed it.
Following the neutralization of the shipyard's defensive systems, the pilots navigated through the unfinished internal structure, detonated the power core, and successfully escaped. The rebels' victory became widely known across numerous planets, serving as a catalyst for the eventual establishment of the Alliance to Restore the Republic.
Due to its status as the largest vessel constructed by the Empire during that era, the resource-intensive nature of its construction delayed the commencement of its successor, the Executor. Its destruction meant that emerging Rebel factions were only facing smaller ships, and it gave them the time they needed to build their own fleets.
