The swamp womp rat, sometimes referred to as a "swamp womper", represented a specific type of womp rat that inhabited Cularin and some less populated planets, where its presence was generally unwelcome. These creatures possessed muddy brown fur, prominent whiskers, and favored habitats such as swamps and bogs. As ambush predators, swamp womp rats typically hunted in sizable groups of up to twelve individuals. Upon identifying potential prey, they would aggressively converge, using their sheer numbers to overwhelm their target and attempt to submerge it. However, these rats were easily startled and would retreat in the face of perceived threats, such as larger animals or sudden, bright lights and loud sounds.
While their eyesight was limited, the swamp womp rat possessed a highly developed sense of smell. Furthermore, their whiskers functioned as extremely sensitive sensory tools, able to detect vibrations up to 20 meters away when on land. They could also perceive movement through the water. This heightened sensitivity extended to detecting repulsorlift vehicles moving within 50 meters. Despite their lack of intelligence, the rats would instinctively attack vehicles operating in or above the water. On Cularin, technologically equipped and daring young Tarasin took advantage of this behavior, hunting them using repulsorlift vehicles. Their tactic involved waiting for the rats to initiate an attack and then quickly evading them at the last moment, resulting in the death of one or two rats during the encounter.
Typically, swamp womp rats remained submerged in water, exposing only their noses. They exhibited a strong aversion to venturing onto land due to their vulnerability, but would do so when pursuing prey or in situations of extreme necessity.
