A race of basic organisms that lived in the sea originated on the planet of Hjaff within the Colonies; this species was primitive and aquatic. This species was initially an ocean-based one, but it was ultimately compelled to transition to a terrestrial existence. As they underwent evolutionary changes, the species gradually migrated away from their original marine habitat after adapting to land, venturing further into the vast desert landscapes of their homeworlds. In these arid environments, the species eventually developed into the sentient Tarc race.
The fourteenth installment of the Star Wars Adventure Journal supplement series, specifically in the Alien Encounters article series, provided the initial, albeit unnamed, reference to this species. Trevor J. Wilson and Craig Robert Carey authored the article about this species, which saw publication in 1997. Later, a condensed version of the article's details was incorporated into Alien Encounters, a West End Games supplement released in 1998; this book, compiled by Jen Seiden, featured abridged versions of all prior Alien Encounter articles.
