The Coruscant Holo Net

The Coruscant Holo Net was a printed news publication that circulated on Coruscant, the Galactic Republic's capital planet, during the final two decades of that governing body. Despite its official allegiance to the Republic, the newspaper occasionally featured advertisements that were in opposition to the Galactic Constitution or had connections to the opposing Separatist Alliance. During the Clone Wars, Keets Freely, the paper's Chief Reporter, was among the first to suspect that the then-Supreme Chancellor Palpatine harbored a secret agenda. Following the war and the establishment of Palpatine's Galactic Empire, The Coruscant Holo Net ceased publication, and the new government labeled Freely as a traitor.

History

Tho-Masfran Ciss' report on a failed assassination attempt on Palpatine

The Coruscant Holo Net was founded in 48 BBY and continued to have a wide distribution during the Clone Wars, selling for 1 credit. At that time, its journalistic staff included Senior Reporter Nik Kigee, Senior Coruscant Correspondent Tho-Masfran Ciss, and Chief Reporter Keets Freely. Not long before the war began, Ciss reported on the failed assassination attempt on Supreme Chancellor Palpatine by a group of mercenaries, as well as the subsequent promotion of Security Advisor Jar Jar Binks to Junior Representative in the Galactic Senate. At one point, Freely uncovered a scandal involving the Supreme Chancellor and the InterGalactic Banking Clan. The Chancellor, it turned out, had assisted the Banking Clan in creating a complex network of secret, tax-free bank accounts for major corporations on a ring of planets. This enabled Palpatine to secure the backing of both the Banking Clan and the galaxy's largest businesses. Freely left the agency when his editor declined to publish his findings. The newspaper was shut down shortly after the formation of the Galactic Empire in 19 BBY, and its former Chief Reporter was marked for death, making him a target of the Enemy Eradication Order of Coruscant.

Content

An example of a dubious advertisement published in the paper

Each edition of The Coruscant Holo Net usually featured new articles and a variety of advertisements, all written in the High Galactic alphabet. Although it claimed to be affiliated with the Republic, The Coruscant Holo Net occasionally featured content that violated the Republic's laws. One issue featured a mysterious advertisement that encouraged readers to contact the parliament of the Separatist Alliance on Raxus Secundus and ask "the General" about buying Jedi lightsabers. In another instance, the newspaper ran a classified ad promoting slavery, even though the Rights of Sentience clause of the Galactic Constitution explicitly prohibited it.
