The purpose-built facility known as The Well was located at the Academy for Young Imperials on Lothal, and it was designed to be remotely reconfigured to present a diverse range of challenges and obstacle courses. This large, man-made pit was capable of automatic descent to a specified depth. Along its walls were automated repulsorlift platforms, which the cadets utilized to ascend back to the top. Occasionally, it could be remotely adjusted to incorporate the Pillar, a massive structure that cadets were obligated to scale.
Commandant Cumberlayne Aresko employed the Well as a means to impress upon the cadets the significance of winning, regardless of the price. Aresko also bestowed upon the top three performers additional rations, assignments at the Imperial Complex, and even a trip on an AT-DP walker as rewards. Furthermore, he leveraged the Well to evaluate the physical strength, mental sharpness, leadership capabilities, and strategic flexibility of the Imperial cadets. During his infiltration of the Imperial Academy, the rebel Ezra Bridger participated in training exercises within the Well alongside his fellow cadets Jai Kell and Zare Leonis on multiple instances.
