A thought shield, which can also be referred to as a mental shield, represented a Force technique employed by individuals sensitive to the Force to conceal their innermost thoughts, feelings, and intentions from prying minds. This skill was instilled from a young age in Padawans, apprentices, and even diplomats on occasion, with the purpose of preventing others from accessing and deciphering their thoughts and emotions.
In combat situations, the ability to shield one's thoughts proved invaluable, as an adversary could potentially anticipate the actions of an unprotected opponent, enabling them to effectively counter or evade attacks. The technique seemingly relied solely on a robust mental resolve and the capacity for sustained concentration. Over time, this focused state would transition into an automatic, subconscious process. Through deliberate concentration, an individual could raise or lower the shield according to their needs, although it was generally maintained in a raised position.
Atton Rand demonstrated exceptional proficiency in this technique, having received training in the Echani arts to pursue Jedi while serving in a Sith special operations unit. His primary method involved mentally engaging in "pazaak" to occupy his mind. While generally successful, he was ultimately unable to completely block Kreia's telepathic powers. During his association with Meetra Surik, he also imparted this skill to her.
Mara Jade likewise utilized a thought shield as a defensive barrier against the Dark Jedi Joruus C'baoth when he attempted to sway her to his cause during the events of the Thrawn campaign.
