The TIE ap-1, more commonly known as the TIE mauler, was a lightweight Imperial ground assault vehicle. Santhe/Sienar Technologies designed and manufactured it, and it saw action in the early stages of the Galactic Civil War. As a member of the Twin Ion Engine, or TIE, series, the TIE mauler came about because the Empire needed a speedy ground assault vehicle to combat the growing rebellion. It featured three laser cannons, a reinforced self-destruct mechanism, and minimal armor due to its emphasis on speed. Despite being intended for the Galactic Civil War, it saw limited service, eventually being replaced by the TIE crawler, which drew inspiration from the mauler's design.

The TIE mauler's design incorporated a standard TIE/LN starfighter cockpit, situated between two tank treads instead of wings. Like other TIE series vehicles, the mauler prioritized speed and agility over armor protection and deflector shields. Due to their vulnerability, these vehicles were often deployed in groups of five. However, their effectiveness was maximized when attacking in larger formations (e.g., 10-15 vehicles) because their speed allowed multiple units to rapidly overwhelm enemy defenses by focusing their attacks on single targets. Their rapid-fire, albeit weak, cannons proved highly effective for swiftly eliminating lighter enemy resistance, one target at a time. In the right circumstances, TIE Maulers could swiftly conclude battles that would otherwise be prolonged by striking before the enemy could establish their heavier defenses (provided they arrived before setup).
Although TIE maulers were equipped with three rapid-firing blaster cannons, the vehicle operators quickly realized that the treads themselves were also effective weapons, perhaps even more so than the cannons, against enemy infantry. The ap-1's gruesome act of running over Rebel soldiers led to its nickname. Maulers also had core overload technology that could be activated in emergencies. This system would overload the engines, causing them to detonate after a short delay. Rebel soldiers would attempt to either destroy the mauler or escape during this brief window.
Santhe/Sienar Technologies engineered the vehicle to meet the Empire's demand for a swift and inexpensive ground vehicle. As a result, maulers saw action throughout the Galactic Civil War. Nevertheless, they served as the basis for the more sophisticated century tank, also known as the TIE crawler.
