Generally, the term transport was applied to any starship designed for the movement of cargo or passengers, though it could also apply to other types of vehicles fulfilling the same purpose.
Distinguishing Features
Transports existed in a huge range of dimensions, from compact light freighters such as the YT-1300 manufactured by the Corellian Engineering Corporation, all the way up to enormous vessels capable of holding thousands of tons of goods and featuring docking bays for smaller transports.
Vehicles like freighters and passenger liners, which served as transports, were typically not intended for combat scenarios, often lacking armaments and possessing low speeds. However, these transports could be easily altered and transformed into formidable fighting machines, a practice favored by groups like pirates and smugglers. Militaries also modified transports to carry troops and offer battlefield support. For example, the Imperial Navy utilized the Sentinel-class landing craft produced by Cygnus Spaceworks to quickly send forces down to planetary surfaces. The Death Watch faction of Mandalorians made use of Gauntlet fighters to both transport their soldiers and provide combat assistance.
An example of a transport vehicle that did not travel through space was the Gungan bongo submarine, which was an underwater transport used by the Gungans of Naboo.
