A tri-wing shuttle served as the escape vehicle for General Grievous when he fled Coruscant while holding his captive, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine.
The IG-100 MagnaGuard crew aboard this shuttle downed an LAAT/i gunship piloted by Jedi Master Mace Windu as it approached. Before the gunship crashed, Mace leaped out and attempted to prevent the shuttle's departure. General Grievous then ignited four lightsabers to fight the Jedi, but the Force was used by Windu to crush Grievous's chest, which aggravated his pre-existing condition, leading to uncontrollable coughing fits that persisted until his duel against Obi-Wan Kenobi on Utapau. Ultimately, the shuttle successfully escaped and reached Grievous's Providence-class carrier/destroyer flagship, the Invisible Hand.
James Luceno's novel, Labyrinth of Evil, marked the first appearance of the Tri-wing shuttle. Within the novel, the craft utilized by Grievous to transport Palpatine to the Invisible Hand was alternately referred to as both a tri-wing shuttle and a tri-winged shuttle. However, in Star Wars: Clone Wars, the vehicle employed by Grievous only exhibits two (though _tri_angular) wings, with the possibility of the rear section being considered a third "wing."
