A stormtrooper squad represented a subdivision within the Imperial Stormtrooper Corps during the era of the Galactic Civil War. This squad, at minimum consisting of five stormtroopers, was composed of clones derived from the Mandalorian warrior Jango Fett. Functioning as one of the many squads within the elite 501st Legion of the Imperial Military's Stormtrooper Corps, their directives originated from the Dark Lord of the Sith known as Darth Vader.
During the Galactic Civil War, this particular squad was comprised of Human male stormtroopers who served in the Stormtrooper Corps. The 501st Legion, the elite stormtrooper legion to which they belonged, was also informally referred to as Vader's Fist, due to their direct subordination to the Dark Lord Darth Vader, the enforcer of Emperor Palpatine. This squad was part of the troop contingent stationed aboard the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer known as the Devastator.
In the year 0 BBY, after Rebel operatives successfully transmitted the stolen schematics (the plans) for the Death Star, the new Imperial superweapon, to the Tantive IV, the CR90 corvette of Senator Leia Organa, the Devastator gave chase and successfully captured the vessel near the planet Tatooine. This particular stormtrooper squad was among the troopers who boarded the captured corvette. Darth Vader instructed the assault commander to locate the schematics and bring all passengers to him alive. After Trooper DV-692 captured Organa, the squad was tasked with escorting her to Vader.
The squad's initial appearance occurred in the novelization of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, published in December of 1976, and ghostwritten by Alan Dean Foster. The Revised Fourth Draft of A New Hope also mentions that "a squad of armored stormtroopers" escorted Organa to Vader.
