Welcome, Enough Redshirts!
SWG Imperial troopers
Hello. In Star Wars Galaxies, the practice of reusing 3D assets for multiple purposes was fairly common. This asset recycling occurred across various in-game elements, such as food items, beverages, and weapons. In this specific instance, the developers also repurposed 3D models for Non-Player Characters (NPCs). The 3D model in question was internally labeled as "imperial_soldier" and was predominantly utilized for NPCs known within the game as "Imperial troopers," which is essentially a condensed form of "Imperial Army trooper." It is true, however, that this same 3D model seemingly served as the basis for additional NPCs, notably including several ranked members of what was referred to as a "civil patrol." Examining the game's data files, the following named NPCs made use of this particular 3D model: an Imperial cadet, an Imperial cadet squadleader, a civil patrol captain, a civil patrol commander, a droid corps junior technician, an Imperial senior cadet, an Imperial trooper, an Imperial Private, and a Veteran Imperial Trooper. Furthermore, it should be noted that there were also NPCs designated as a civil patrol corporal, a civilian patrolman, and a civil patrol sergeant, but in contrast to the civil patrol captain and commander, these NPCs were built using distinct 3D models. All of the previously listed named NPCs were categorized as Imperial NPCs. Some archived examples of these civil patrol NPCs can be found in the following links:

Frankly, I don't recall ever encountering these civil patrol NPCs during my time playing SWG, although they undoubtedly existed in the game at some point. It's probable that they were present only in the game's earlier iterations, before one of the significant game updates (either pre-Combat Upgrade (CU) or, more likely, pre-New Game Enhancements (NGE)). They appeared to be arbitrarily placed, Imperial-aligned police or law enforcement figures who patrolled various regions. The game files suggest that they would appear on various planets and in cities, such as Yavin 4 and Tatooine, where they would accompany Imperial troopers and other Imperial NPCs. Nevertheless, I would consider them to be separate from Imperial Army troopers. StarsiderSWG (talk) 15:15, 22 November 2022 (UTC)
