[](/article/file:jedi_academy_pc.png) The _Jedi Knight_ series of video games introduced us to [Kyle Katarn](/article/kyle_katarn), a [Jedi Master](/article/jedi_master/legends), along with his apprentice, [Jaden Korr](/article/jaden_korr). The term "**video game**" encompasses any interactive game software played on a video game console, or any computer game where the primary feedback mechanism is a video display. ## Video Game Genres - [First-person shooter (FPS)](https://en.wikipedia.org/article/first-person_shooter) games are a type of video or computer game where the player sees the game world through the eyes of their character. These games commonly involve firearms and other weapons of combat. _Star Wars: Dark Forces_ and its subsequent installments fall into the FPS category, as does _Star Wars: Republic Commando_. For additional examples, refer to [Category:First-person shooters](/article/category:first-person_shooters). - **Flight simulators** are a genre of games that simulate the experience of piloting an aircraft or spacecraft against enemies or through challenging environments. The [X-wing](/article/star_wars:_x-wing) and [TIE Fighter](/article/star_wars:_tie_fighter) series, the [Rogue Squadron](/article/star_wars:_rogue_squadron_(video_game)) series, the [Starfighter](/article/star_wars:_starfighter) series, and _Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Lightspeed_ all exemplify flight simulator games. - [Real-time strategy (RTS)](https://en.wikipedia.org/article/real-time_strategy) games are typically computer-based games where players observe and control multiple units from an overhead perspective. In RTS games, players often direct groups of characters without directly engaging in combat themselves. Examples of RTS games include [Star Wars: Rebellion](/article/star_wars:_rebellion_(video_game)), _Star Wars: Force Commander_, _Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds_, and _Star Wars: Empire at War_. - [Role-playing games (RPGs)](https://en.wikipedia.org/article/role-playing_video_game) are a type of video or computer game where the player observes their character from a third-person view and makes decisions that influence the game's narrative. _Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic_ and _Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords_ are examples of RPGs. They share certain similarities with tabletop [roleplaying games](/article/roleplaying_game). - [Massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs)](https://en.wikipedia.org/article/massively_multiplayer_online_role-playing_game) are online games where players assume the roles of characters and interact with one another on a large scale. These games often feature diverse settings and a multitude of non-player characters (NPCs) to create a more immersive experience. Examples include [Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided](/article/star_wars_galaxies), [Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures](/article/star_wars:_clone_wars_adventures_(video_game)), and _Star Wars: The Old Republic_. ## List of Star Wars Games by Release Date ### 1980s #### 1982 - The first _Star Wars_ video game was _Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back_.
