Vobin Sobos was a pirate of the Dug species, operating throughout the time of the Galactic Civil War, according to legends. Sobos' pirate group at one point provided services to Thaum Rystra, a Dark Jedi, as the stories tell. Nevertheless, Rystra eventually imprisoned Sobos along with several other pirates, transporting them to the Temple of Pain. This Sith Temple, as legend has it, was constructed within an asteroid situated in the Tascollan Nebula. It was there that Rystra subjected them to Sith alchemy, leaving Sobos permanently marked.
