Vylagos

Vylagos was a Skakoan male engineer hailing from the Core World of Skako. He specialized in constructing experimental weaponry and military equipment for the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars. Around the year 21 BBY, he devised a wormhole generator. This device was inadvertently triggered by the 313th Legion, a military unit belonging to the Republic, while they were stationed on the planet of Ando Prime. Subsequently, Excelsior Company, another unit within the Republic forces, encountered Vylagos on Ando Prime as they investigated the disappearance of the 313th.

Biography

Born on the planet of Skako, located within the Core Worlds, Vylagos was a male Skakoan who lived sometime before the Clone Wars. By the year 21 BBY, the Confederacy of Independent Systems had employed him as an engineer. Throughout his time working for the Confederacy, he created at least two weapons. One such invention was a wormhole generator, designed for a surprise assault on the galactic capital of Coruscant. Its purpose was to transport battalions of battle droids directly into the capital, bypassing its extensive defensive systems. Vylagos engineered the wormhole generator on the Mid Rim planet Ando Prime, under the protection of Confederate General Terrus. However, before the generator could be perfected, the Galactic Republic's 313th Legion and Jedi Master Po Bandis accidentally activated it during a battle on the planet. The device then transported Terrus, the 313th's clone troopers, and the Jedi Master away from the planet in mere seconds. Later, Vylagos was discovered on Ando Prime by the Republic's Excelsior Company, which had been dispatched to investigate the disappearance of the 313th.

Subsequently, Vylagos underwent interrogation by Vargus, the clone commander of the company. Following this, Vargus compelled the Skakoan to activate the device on two more occasions. These activations resulted in the transportation of clones to a planet situated on the opposite side of the galaxy, and back to rescue the missing legion of troopers.

Personality and traits

Vylagos held a dismissive view of the Confederacy and politics in general. Instead, his allegiance lay with whoever provided him with employment, irrespective of their political affiliations. He also displayed a strong interest in monetary gain, to the point where Po Bandis observed that Vylagos was willing to do anything for money.

Behind the scenes

Vylagos was a character conceived for the 2008 book, The Clone Wars: The Lost Legion. This book was a young reader novel in the Decide Your Destiny series, based upon the Star Wars: The Clone Wars film. Jake Forbes was the author of the book.

Alternative outcomes

Given that The Lost Legion is a Decide Your Destiny novel, the narrative presents numerous alternative outcomes, each determined by the reader's choices. This article focuses on the storyline where Vylagos plays the most prominent role. The alternative paths are detailed below.

As Excelsior Company begins their investigation into the missing legion's disappearance, they stumble upon a device that was dropped by Grievous, the cyborg Supreme Commander of the Droid Armies. By following the coordinates displayed on the scanner, they locate Vylagos as he attempts to flee a Confederate outpost. At this point, the clone troopers face a decision: either pursue Vylagos immediately or use their radio to contact their commander for further instructions. Should the reader opt for contacting the commander, the superior officer will order the clone troopers to give chase to Vylagos. However, in this scenario, the troopers fail to apprehend Vylagos, and he manages to escape. Alternatively, if the reader chooses to have the protagonists pursue Vylagos without seeking their commander's guidance, the clones successfully capture the Skakoan before he can escape. Subsequently, the rest of Excelsior Company arrives at the outpost to interrogate him. During the interrogation, Vylagos reveals the details of his creation and how the 313th Legion accidentally activated it. The reader is then presented with another choice: either have the characters travel through a wormhole created by the machine or remain behind. If the reader decides to stay behind, the machine malfunctions and is destroyed, inadvertently transporting several clone troopers to a random location. The remaining members of Excelsior Company then compel Vylagos to begin constructing a new machine, a process that is estimated to take several months. If the trooper chooses to venture through the wormhole, they will find themselves transported to a planet situated beyond the Outer Rim.

Another possible scenario for Excelsior Company's initial encounter with Vylagos occurs during a reconnaissance mission on Ando Prime. While two troopers are engaged in this mission, they discover the Confederate outpost. Inside, they find Vylagos lying unconscious on a table. One of the troopers, a medic, examines Vylagos using his FX-3 medical assistant droid. The medic must then decide whether to administer bacta to Vylagos via injection or perform surgery on him directly. If the medic chooses to operate, his unfamiliarity with Skakoan anatomy leads him to make an incision in the wrong location, causing Vylagos to fall into a coma. Consequently, Republic scientists are dispatched to Ando Prime to examine the comatose Skakoan and his invention. However, if the medic opts for the bacta injection, Vylagos awakens and explains his invention to the two troopers. The rest of Excelsior Company then arrives, and Vylagos, utilizing his invention, sends several of them to the planet to which the 313th Legion had been transported. Later, the clones return with the lost legion of clone troopers and destroy Vylagos's invention.

A third potential encounter with Vylagos arises during a mission to infiltrate the Confederate compound on Ando Prime. Vargus and a demolitions expert discover Vylagos's wormhole creator, which is protected by an electromagnetic field generator. The demolitions expert then faces a choice: either destroy the EMF generator or use an electric pulse to disable it. Should the expert choose to detonate the generator, the resulting explosion will also destroy Vylagos's invention, leading to the expert's reassignment back to Kamino—the homeworld of the clone troopers—for reconditioning into a new specialization. If the expert decides to use a pulse, the generator is deactivated. Vylagos emerges and is interrogated by Vargus, who learns that Vylagos requires supplies to repair the wormhole generator, which is supposedly damaged, in order to bring the 313th Legion back to Ando Prime. Several troopers are sent to a nearby trading post to acquire these parts; however, the supposed location of the trading post turns out to be a snow beast nest, as Vylagos had lured the troopers into a trap. Upon returning to the compound, the troopers force Vylagos to activate the wormhole generator for real, sending a squad of clones to rescue the 313th Legion.
