Wayfarer-class medium freighter

The Wayfarer-class medium freighter, alternatively known as the Wayfarer-class medium transport, represented a medium-sized transport vessel. It was manufactured by Kuat Systems Engineering, which was a now-defunct subsidiary company belonging to Kuat Drive Yards.

Design

The layout of a Wayfarer-class transport

The design of the Wayfarer-class incorporated a detachable section on the port side. The original concept involved modular reconfiguration, allowing for the attachment of a passenger section, a hangar bay, or a cargo module to an armature extending from the starboard section. Due to cost constraints, Kuat Systems Engineering had to reduce the scope of their plans, ultimately producing only the hangar bay module. This module primarily functioned as cargo space for most owners, who typically did not transport or house starfighters. While some prototypes and custom versions of other modules existed, they were rare and mainly used by large commercial shipping operations based on highly developed metropolitan planets like Coruscant.

History

A smuggler-owned Wayfarer-class transport

The flexibility provided by the detachable module initially generated excitement. However, this faded when it became apparent that the armature was incompatible with standard cargo containers. This issue, coupled with a substantial price, contributed to the termination of the Wayfarer-class's production run. Despite its shortcomings that prevented it from achieving significant commercial success, the ship's adaptability made it a well-rounded vessel. It gained popularity among smugglers, who could jettison the cargo pod to evade customs inspections. Rebel forces also utilized it as an assault shuttle.

A modified version of this vessel was the property of Trossk, a Trandoshan bounty hunter.
