Whrr functioned as a librarian droid with masculine programming, operating in the year 22 BBY. He was stationed within a modest library branch situated in Tipoca City on the planet Kamino. A young Boba Fett was a frequent visitor to this library branch because his bounty hunter father resided on Kamino, serving as the prime clone for the Galactic Republic's new clone army, which was being created by the Kaminoan cloners.
Prior to Fett's departure from Kamino with his father, an event triggered by the Jedi's discovery of Jango Fett's involvement in the assassination attempts targeting Senator Padmé Amidala, Boba returned his borrowed books to the droid. Inadvertently, he included a holobook containing advice from his father. Following his father's death, Boba Fett returned to Kamino to retrieve the book. Whrr returned the holobook to Fett, along with 250 credits as compensation for holding onto a book that was not the property of the branch.
During 22 BBY, Whrr's place of work was a small library branch in Tipoca City on the planet Kamino. The branch was equipped with a bell and a doorway slot, used for the exchange of books and hologames. Due to the slot's use, library patrons never saw Whrr. He developed a friendship with the young Boba Fett, encouraging his reading habits while simultaneously discouraging his use of hologames. Boba was residing with his father, Jango Fett, who was the prime clone for the clone troopers in the Galactic Republic's new army, which was being produced by the natives of Kamino. Boba Fett was a consistent visitor to the library, and once came after he attempted to free one of five sea mice that his father wanted him to feed to Jango's sea eel while the latter was on a mission to Coruscant. The freed sea-mouse was immediately eaten. Whrr comforted the young Fett before praising his improved reading abilities and providing him with new books through the slot.
However, Jango's mission soon affected him and his son. A Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, discovered Kamino, whose coordinates had been removed from the Jedi Archives' records. He also found Jango Fett, who the Jedi suspected was responsible for the mission. Jango Fett decided that they should leave Kamino to avoid Jedi attention, and Boba had little time to return the library books to Whrr to avoid overdue fees. Boba quickly shoved the books through the slot, and a black holobook containing advice was sent with them. Whrr noticed the book and tried to notify Boba, but the young boy was in too much of a hurry to return to his father and left without it.
Boba Fett later came back to Kamino to find the book, which contained important information from his father, who had perished shortly after leaving Kamino on the planet Geonosis at the hands of another Jedi, Mace Windu, leaving Boba Fett an orphan. Boba Fett desperately wanted the information from his father, and was soon at the closed library branch, calling for Whrr to help him. Whrr extended an awning to shield Fett from the rain that was common on Kamino, and listened to Fett's story about the events that brought him back to Whrr, including the fact that Fett was now an orphan. Fett requested his holobook, which Whrr gave him, along with 250 credits because he realized that the young boy had no money to survive. Whrr said farewell to him, and made a snuffling sound close to crying as Fett left.
Whrr, a librarian droid with masculine programming, was classified as a class three droid because he provided services to the public. Whrr made whirring and clicking sounds as he worked inside the library [branch](/article/tipoca_city_library_branch]. He could also make a snuffling noise close to crying, and had a noise to change the subject.
Whrr became friends with the young Boba Fett because of his visits to Whrr's branch, and the friendship was strong enough that Fett told Whrr his problems. When Fett left for the last time, Whrr made a snuffling sound that sounded like he was about to cry. As a librarian, Whrr did not like hologames, and instead encouraged Fett to find the pictures and images in books. Whrr monitored Fett's reading level as the young boy regularly took books from the library.
One of the reasons Whrr stayed inside the library branch was that he was unsure about things, such as life being hard on the small and weak. He also did not have a sense of humor, and was offended when Fett told him that if Whrr had his way, everyone would read books. Whrr was observant, and quickly noticed when Fett accidentally gave him the holobook with his other books. Whrr was also good at understanding Fett's problems, and understood right away that Fett was in trouble when Fett told him the events that led up to him being orphaned. Whrr was concerned, and helped Fett out as best as he could with 250 credits, disguising it as a fee.
Whrr first appeared in the novel Boba Fett: The Fight to Survive, written by Terry Bisson and released on April 23, 2002. Because the book is written from Boba Fett's point of view, he does not see Whrr, and only talks to him through the slot. After hearing the clicking and whirring sounds Whrr made, Fett thinks that Whrr was a droid. This article assumes that Fett's thinking is correct.
