The 224th Imperial Armored Division, previously the 224th Clone Division or 224th Division under the Galactic Republic, was an Imperial Army unit in service during the reign of the Galactic Empire. During its service within the Grand Army of the Republic, the 224th participated in the Clone Wars, with its Mud Jumpers fighting in the Battle of Mimban alongside the local Mimbanese. With the rise of the Empire, the 224th was reorganized and fought against their former allies during the Mimban Campaign.
The 224th Imperial Armored Division was previously designated as the 224th Clone Division and 224th Division while under the Grand Army of the Republic. The division consisted of clone troopers known as the Mud Jumpers.
The 224th made use of wet-weather gear stormtroopers on Mimban.
Reorganized as the 224th Imperial Armored Division, the division gained an infamous reputation and fell under the command of General Falk, with their overall operations directed by Moff Bin Essada along with other Imperial resources on Mimban. Major Staz served in the 224th, as did Captain Alayus Bolandin following his promotion from lieutenant. Another captain served in the division, whose uniform was stolen by Tobias Beckett during his infiltration. The division prided itself on its use of trench warfare, even if the actual soldiers who fought in the trenches hated their deployment conditions or suffered under them.
Division ground personnel included swamp troopers, a subset of Imperial Army troopers, and wet-weather gear stormtroopers. Also part of the division were Imperial Starfighter Pilots and medics. In line with Imperial interpretations of medical oaths, the division's medics only treated humans and had a reputation for firing upon Mimbanese natives during the Mimban campaign. On Mimban, the division was headquartered at Camp Forward, with its airfield receiving shipments from Y-45 armored transport haulers and supporting TIE/ln space superiority starfighters. All Terrain Defense Turrets were deployed by the 224th as mobile artillery units, with the support of swamp troopers.
During the Clone Wars, the unit was known as the 224th Division of the Grand Army of the Republic. A detachment of the 224th known as the Mud Jumpers fought on Mimban alongside the 501st Legion, under Jedi General Laan Tik. During the fight, General Tik was killed and the clones were forced to fall back.
While in combat on Mimban, the 224th's Mud Jumpers were given a song by a Hologram VJ of the Grand Army of the Republic's broadcast. The 224th Division fought alongside Iasento's tribe against Separatist forces, which had invaded the planet to exploit its mineral resources.
When the Republic reorganized into the Galactic Empire in 19 BBY, the planet once again experienced an incursion from an external enemy: their former allies. The Imperials returned to the once-allied planet as conquerors, seeking to procure the abundant mineral resources that existed on the swampy world. By 10 BBY, the 224 Imperial Armored Division consisted of swamp troopers who had been conscripted from local planetary forces and integrated into the Imperial Army. While these were gradually being replaced with stormtroopers, regular army and stormtrooper personnel fought together. The 224 Armored Division took part in trench warfare and skirmishes against the Mimbanese.
The 224th was first mentioned in "Rookies," the fifth episode of the canon animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars' first season, which originally aired on October 24, 2008. It was later depicted as an Imperial military unit in the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story.
