In 10,966 BBY, a battle took place at the celestial body Uquine at the conclusion of the conflict known as the Pius Dea Civil War. After the Galactic Republic had been under the control of the Humanocentric Pius Dea cult for a millennium, an alliance between the Caamasi species; the Jedi Order; the independent world Alsakan and its allies; and the former Pius Dea members known as the Renunciates, who had converted to a secret anti-Pius Dea faith, plotted to overthrow the Republic regime.
The Bureau of Ships and Services, persuaded into joining the resistance, seeded Pius Dea cathedral ships with rogue navigation computer code, which it activated a year after the Renunciates had revealed themselves and opened a civil war against the Pius Dea Faithful. The Pius Dea warships were launched into hyperspace, with ships including the Republic Supreme Chancellor Contispex XIX's vessel being deposited at Uquine, where a fleet of waiting Renunciate battleships annihilated them. Meanwhile, the Jedi captured Contispex XIX, allowing for the subsequent end to the Pius Dea rule over the Republic.
After the 11,987 BBY election of the Galactic Republic Supreme Chancellor Contispex I, who was a member of the Humanocentric Pius Dea religious sect, the Republic rapidly came under the control of fanatical Pius Dea adherents. Contispex I and his dynastic successor Chancellors initiated a series of crusades spanning a millennium and targeting alien species at the borders of the Republic. Beginning around 11,100 BBY, Pius Dea Inquisitions also tried, condemnded, and executed in mass trials those members of the Republic who were found to be "impure."
In 11,933 BBY, the Jedi Order, the ancient protectors of the Republic, declared itself no longer subject to Republic rule in protest against the actions of the Pius Dea. Approximately eight centuries later, members of the Caamasi species approached the Order and convinced the Jedi to end their isolation and help end the Pius Dea tyranny. The Caamasi, Jedi, and agents of the independent world Alsakan and its allies then began to spread a secret faith throughout the Pius Dea ranks, with the converted becoming the Renunciates. The Caamasi also persuaded the Bureau of Ships and Services (BoSS) to abandon its traditional neutrality to help the secret anti-Pius Dea alliance that made its preparations over the course of a century. Reasoning that Pius Dea was a disease that was ravaging the galaxy, the Bureau of Ships and Services seeded the memory banks of Pius Dea cathedral ships with rogue navigation computer code.
Finally, in 10,967 BBY, the Renunciates revealed themselves, igniting the Pius Dea Civil War and fighting the Pius Dea Faithful with the help of Alsakani, the Jedi, and alien navies. A year later, when the Faithful appeared to be prevailing, the BoSS activated the code aboard the Pius Dea warships, causing thousands of them to jump into hyperspace. Many of the vessels emerged in interstellar space with their hyperdrive and communications systems disabled.
The ships of the Pius Dea vanguard, including Flame of Sinthara with Supreme Chancellor Contispex XIX aboard, instead emerged at the Colonies celestial body Uquine, where an immense fleet of Renunciate battleships awaited them. Caught off guard, the offensive and defensive systems of the cathedral ships had been rendered inoperative, and the Renunciates methodically destroyed the Pius Dea vessels. The Jedi also captured the Supreme Chancellor on the bridge of their ship.
Contispex XIX was tried and imprisoned, and Jedi Grand Master Biel Ductavis became the Supreme Chancellor. Under Ductavis's leadership, the Pius Dea rule ended, and the Ductavis Era, a time period that lasted from approximately 11,000 BBY to 9000 BBY and was known as an age of rebuilding for the Republic, began. During a series of meetings held at the world Prefsbelt after the victory at Uquine, Renunciate Admiral Pers Pradeux and his fellow officers reorganized and rebuilt the Republic Navy, which, by assisting in the overthrow of Contispex XIX, had restored some of its honor after having previously served the Pius Dea. In the process, Pradeux helped forge naval traditions that continued to last for millennia. In 104 ABY, Doctor Gabrel Treon indirectly mentioned the battle at Uquine, characterizing it as a well-remembered "famous encounter," in the article "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Praji: A Cartel of Genes," published in the Byblos Journal of Historical Science.
The "famous encounter" that ended the rule of Pius Dea over the Galactic Republic was mentioned in "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Praji," an article authored by Nathan O'Keefe and published as part of the StarWars.com Hyperspace feature on February 5, 2009. O'Keefe intentionally left the mention vague so that the authors of future Star Wars novels or comics could develop the event more fully. The battle was eventually described by the April 3, 2012 reference book The Essential Guide to Warfare by Jason Fry and Paul R. Urquhart.
The battle of Uquine was then featured in the article "10 Key Battles," authored by Fry and Urquhart and published in the 133rd issue of the Star Wars Insider magazine on May 1, 2012. In the article, the battle was ranked fourth after the Battle of Yavin and the Battle of Endor of the original trilogy films Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope and Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, respectively, and the Battle of Ebaq from the Star Wars: The New Jedi Order novel series.
