Chreeto

Chreeto, who also went by the moniker Chreeto the Defiant, was a Rodian bounty hunter operating during the Galactic Civil War. Known for his flamboyant nature and boastful attitude, Chreeto, a celebrated figure in his home province on Rodia, commanded a team of six other hunters. These hunters were employed as Imperial retainers with the task of capturing Rebel fugitives following the Battle of Hoth in 3 ABY. Chreeto and his crew pursued a group of Rebel operatives who were investigating the wreckage of the GR-75 medium transport named Treasure Trove located within the Hoth asteroid field. They later confronted the same Rebels inside The Royal Casino situated in Cloud City on Bespin, but the Rebels managed to evade the bounty hunters on each time.

Biography

Hailing from a province on Rodia, his species' homeworld, Chreeto was a Rodian bounty hunter considered a hero by his people. Around the time of the Battle of Hoth in early 3 ABY, amidst the Galactic Civil War, Chreeto led a crew of six Human and near-Human ruffians in the service of the Imperial forces, tasked with capturing Rebels. Known for his flamboyant personality, Chreeto proudly called himself "Chreeto the Defiant."

The Empire, for whom Chreeto and his crew worked, attacking the Rebels in the Battle of Hoth

Following the Battle of Hoth, the Rebel GR-75 medium transport Treasure Trove was left disabled on a large asteroid, comparable in size to a capital ship, within the unpredictable Hoth asteroid field. After investigating the transport wreckage and discovering the crew of the Treasure Trove dead, a team of Rebel agents returned to their starship, the YL-2200 light freighter Out Runner. At that precise moment, Chreeto and his crew, aboard his modified YT-1300 light freighter Prowling Wolf, ambushed the Rebel targets.

Chreeto initiated contact by transmitting a brief vid-comm message to the Out Runner's transceiver, announcing his presence and offering the Rebels a chance to surrender, although he secretly hoped for a thrilling chase. After sending the message, confident in his chances due to his ship's superior firepower, the Prowling Wolf fired a quick shot, which shook the asteroid on which the Out Runner was positioned. The Rodian and his bounty hunter team pursued the Rebels through the dangerous asteroid belt, navigating through a series of fast-moving planetoids. Ultimately, the Rebels successfully evaded Chreeto.

Bespin prior to its occupation

However, Chreeto later encountered the Rebels again in The Royal Casino on Bespin's Cloud City during the chaotic Imperial subjugation of the mining colony. The Rodian, accompanied by three of his hunters and eight Imperial stormtroopers, entered the casino with the specific goal of capturing the Rebels who had previously escaped him in the Hoth asteroid field. Following a subsequent battle, the Rebels once again managed to evade Chreeto.

Personality and traits

Chreeto the Defiant, a somewhat overweight and flamboyant Rodian, genuinely enjoyed his profession as a bounty hunter. In his home province on Rodia, he was regarded as a hero by the local population. Chreeto typically preferred to converse with his targets, aiming to capture at least one of them alive so they could acknowledge his superior skills.

Skills and abilities

Chreeto possessed knowledge about various alien species and demonstrated mechanical skill in astrogation, space transports, and starship gunnery and shields. He also possessed technical expertise in demolitions.

Equipment

Chreeto's garb consisted of a light tan jumpsuit adorned with bright green piping. A red sash, decorated with various Rodian awards, completed his attire. His equipment included a blaster rifle and binders for restraining captives. Chreeto piloted the modified YT-1300 freighter Prowling Wolf, which his crew helped to operate.

Behind the scenes

Chreeto the Defiant's sole appearance is in "Chapter Nine" of the 1996 second edition of the Galaxy Guide 3: The Empire Strikes Back West End Games sourcebook, specifically in Freedom No More, a supplementary roleplaying section of the book. Chreeto, along with other elements in the Freedom No More section of the second edition, represented a significant expansion of the original 1989 first edition of Galaxy Guide 3 by author Pablo Hidalgo.

Possible adventure outcomes

Due to the roleplaying nature of the adventure in which Chreeto is featured, the ultimate outcome of Chreeto's pursuit of the Rebels remains somewhat ambiguous. The intention is for the players, acting as the Rebels, to escape Chreeto during each encounter to continue the adventure, but the adventure's description allows for various escape scenarios. These include a heavy asteroid shower that separates the bounty hunters in the asteroid field, potentially leading to Chreeto encountering a massive space slug. During the Cloud City casino skirmish, the players might use makeshift weapons like chairs and bottles or manipulate the gravitational settings of the casino's dance floor to ensnare their pursuers.

It is possible for the Prowling Wolf to collide with a beldon (pictured), with options for Chreeto to have been killed before that occurrence.

The players also have the option to eliminate all four bounty hunters, including Chreeto, during the casino skirmish. Regardless of the outcome, the Prowling Wolf later attacks the players in the nearby City of the Ugnaughts after their escape from Cloud City. Whether Chreeto is among the bounty hunters aboard the Prowling Wolf at this point depends on whether he died previously, but the Rebels still manage to escape for the third and final time. The adventure suggests that the Rebels might escape after the Prowling Wolf collides with a giant flying beldon in Bespin's atmosphere, with the resulting explosion from the beldon's gas bag destroying the ship.
