Culoph was a Sky Judge who lived on Tython, a planet, before the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic were established. He was known as a famous swordsman who achieved numerous victories in battles. After the New Sith Wars concluded with the end and the Ruusan Reformation took place, Jedi Battlemaster Skarch Vaunk cited Culoph in The Jedi Path: A Manual for Students of the Force. Vaunk used Culoph's words to illustrate the principles of Form "Zero", which emphasized a Jedi's capacity to find peaceful resolutions to conflicts. During the Clone Wars, Grand Master Yoda of the Jedi Order quoted the Sky Judge in a discussion with Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi about the Republic's conflict against the Confederacy of Independent Systems.
The character Culoph was initially mentioned as an unnamed figure within the comic Jedi: Yoda, authored by Jeremy Barlow and published on July 21, 2004. Culoph's official creation occurred in The Jedi Path: A Manual for Students of the Force, penned by Daniel Wallace and released on September 28, 2010. Wallace later clarified that the character was created to provide attribution for a quote featured in Jedi: Yoda.
