D-Wing Space Superiority Fighter

Dubbed the Phoenix, the D-Wing Space Superiority Fighter represented a departure from typical Imperial starfighter designs. Elhon Tay of Tay Industries engineered this craft, responding to perceived shortcomings in the ubiquitous TIE/LN starfighters by many within the Empire.

Specifications

Measuring nineteen meters in length, the D-wing was a substantial fighter. It required a crew of two: a pilot and a gunner, moving away from single-pilot operation. Its incorporation of a Class 2 hyperdrive and concussion missiles elevated its cost, but also ensured it would serve as a potent addition to TIE fighter formations.

The rear gunner primarily operated the rear-facing Bi-Cannon and other weapon systems. However, this crew member could assume full control of the aircraft should the pilot become incapacitated or killed. Conversely, the pilot could manage all of the craft's weaponry, allowing the rear gunner position to be filled by a passenger if necessary.

The Phoenix's weapon systems were intentionally modular, enabling adaptation to diverse mission requirements. The standard configuration allowed for the integration of supplementary weapons or sensor arrays. The utilization of advanced materials in the D-wing's construction resulted in a robust and resilient spacecraft, capable of sustaining and inflicting significant damage.

Historical Context

Tay Industries showcased a single prototype of the fighter on the seventh day of the Cynestra Space Craft Show (CSCS), held above the planet Cynestra during the era of the Galactic Civil War. Fully aware that securing a sale to the Empire necessitated proving the craft's capabilities, Elhon Tay also initiated negotiations with independent escort services and planetary defense forces, anticipating frequent combat engagements. Although this strategy would initially result in financial losses for Tay Industries, Elhon maintained unwavering confidence in his fighter, believing the Imperial Navy would inevitably recognize its value. Dissatisfied with the prospect of a fashion-forward corporation outperforming them, rival starfighter manufacturers like Sienar Fleet Systems dispatched operatives to sabotage the prototype prior to its public unveiling.

Rogan B.B. Cham, a HoloNet News journalist secretly aligned with the Rebel cause, planned to cover the CSCS. Upon learning of the impending debut of a powerful new starfighter, he contacted his Rebel Alliance connections. They arranged for Captain [Reeves] to convene with a Rebel cell on Yukka. This group then rendezvoused with Cham, who transported them to the CSCS aboard his vessel, The Doobage, disguised as cargo.

The Rebels were tasked with either capturing or destroying the prototype starfighter, lacking a detailed operational plan and therefore requiring improvisation. This led to complications when Grand Moff [Torith], who had also shown interest in the starfighter, made an appearance. Elhon Tay hoped to impress Torith with his fighter to enlist him in the fight against the Rebellion, while the Rebel agents aimed to eliminate the Grand Moff due to the hardships he had inflicted on the growing Rebellion.

The Rebel agents, successfully maintaining their cover for the duration of the seven-day event, managed to assassinate Grand Moff Torith and abscond with the prototype starfighter. Whether Tay Industries continued production of the fighter remains uncertain. However, given Elhon Tay's neutrality between the Rebellion and the Empire, it is plausible that he subsequently produced the craft for the Rebellion after they prevented the Empire from acquiring the prototype.
