Disney+ was first announced in late 2017, with a plan of producing original film and television material in addition to catalog content. Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that "a few" Star Wars series were among the content that would be produced for the service. Some of these are The Mandalorian, a revival season of Cartoon Network's animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, as well as the previous seasons, and a television series centered on Cassian Jeron Andor.

In May 2019, Iger said that a third live-action show may premiere on the service sometime prior to the release of the 2023 Star Wars film, which was later revealed to be Obi-Wan Kenobi centered on Obi-Wan Kenobi. A year later, it was announced that a fourth animated show focusing on Clone Force 99, named Star Wars: The Bad Batch, will debut on the service sometime in 2021. According to Variety, all of the service's original content was set for a "broad family appeal."

2019 launch

All Star Wars films were added to Disney+ within the first year of the service, and the first season of The Mandalorian premiered on the day Disney+ debuted. The first season of The Mandalorian concluded on December 27, 2019.
