Fara's Belt

Fara's Belt was a space location in the Outer Rim Territories' Rolion sector. During the Galactic Civil War, it was the site of a Galactic Empire communications station. In 0 ABY, the Rebel Alliance planned to attack the facility, although Imperial Intelligence learned of the upcoming operation—though not which of the Empire's Rolion sector bases specifically would be attacked. Nevertheless, a ruse by Imperial Intelligence's Major Herrit allowed the Empire to learn that the Fara's Belt installation was the target, with an Imperial ambush there subsequently annihilating the attacking Rebel starfighter squadron.

Description

Fara's Belt was a location in space within the Rolion sector, a part of the Trans-Hydian portion of the Outer Rim Territories.

During the Galactic Civil War, Fara's Belt contained a communications station of the Galactic Empire. In 0 ABY, General Jan Dodonna of the Rebel Alliance planned a hit-and-run attack on the facility using the Alliance's new A/SF-01 B-wing starfighters. Imperial Intelligence learned of the Alliance planning an attack on one of its 752 bases in the Rolion sector but did not know which one of them was the target. Major Herrit of Imperial Intelligence then contacted all of those installations and instructed each of them to report a different common systems malfunction—in the case of the Fara's Belt communications station, "gravitational fluctuation malfunction"—to the central Imperial headquarters.

Imperial Intelligence subsequently intercepted a Rebel transmission mentioning the malfunction reported by the Fara's Belt base, which allowed for the Empire to set up an ambush there. When the Rebel B-wing squadron emerged from hyperspace above the communications station, it was immediately surrounded and attacked by an overwhelming number of TIE fighters, including both standard TIE/LN starfighters and TIE/IN interceptors, which proceeded to annihilate the Rebel force. Later, the Alliance's Wing Commander Wedge Antilles mentioned the raid on Fara's Belt in "Alliance Strategy and Tactics Lecture 137: Combat Starfighters," a holo-lecture on Rebel starfighter strategy and tactics aimed at mid-level Alliance military and political leaders.

The erroneous map placement of Fara's Belt in The Essential Atlas

Fara's Belt was first mentioned in Paul Murphy's 1990 The Rebel Alliance Sourcebook, which was published by West End Games for use with Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. In the book, the location was illustrated by Allen Nunis.

The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas placed it in grid square Q-6. Although the StarWars.com Online Companion to that book later placed Fara's Belt in the Rolion sector—information that had originated in The Rebel Alliance Sourcebook and had been repeated in other sourcesThe Essential Atlas Extra: Outer Rim Sectors feature of the Online Companion depicted the territory of that sector and the location of Fara's Belt—as shown on a map in The Essential Atlas—as not intersecting. Instead, the feature depicted the location of Fara's Belt as falling within the territory of the Nuiri sector, which this article assumes is incorrect.
