The foreign residence gown was a Naboo royal outfit from the wardrobe owned by Padmé Amidala when she was the Queen of Naboo. It was made of black cyrene silk and had emblems made with antique beads and metallic thread. The floor-length gown concealed her feet and conveyed a sense of effortless movement. Her hair was styled in a wide fan shape along with an intricate foreknot and ornament over her forehead, and she had decorative suspensas draped over each shoulder. It was paired with the traditional royal makeup of a whitened face, red beauty marks on her cheeks, and the scar of remembrance on her lower lip. Worn when the queen was not in residence on the planet Naboo, the gown represented Amidala's sadness at being away from her homeworld.
In 32 BBY, Amidala fled to Coruscant, the capital planet of the Galactic Republic, to request that the Galactic Senate end Naboo's invasion by the Trade Federation. Unaware of Senator Palpatine's true identity as the Dark Lord of the Sith who had manipulated the crisis, Amidala visited his apartment following the hearing and wore her foreign residence gown. She had a solemn discussion with the Gungan Jar Jar Binks about the events.

The foreign residence gown was created for the 1999 prequel trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. Designed by concept artist Iain McCaig, the finished costume was created by costume designer Trisha Biggar and her department.
