A mouth was a feature of anatomy found in many species which was used to eat, speak, and breathe. The Kallidahin did not have mouths, but could still breathe and speak. Ithorians had two mouths, one on either side of their neck, and their unique throat structure prevented them from speaking Galactic Basic Standard. Cosians were a species that had faces that elongated into beaked mouths. The Shawda Ubb Rappertunie, a member of the Max Rebo Band, played an instrument known as a Growdi Harmonique, which required the use of his fingers, toes, and mouth.
Mouths first appeared in the 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, the first installment of the Star Wars original trilogy.[6]
During the production of A New Hope, the mechanism to move Greedo's mouth broke just before he needed to be shot. Maria De Aragon, who played Greedo in close-up shots, was then asked to put a clothespin between her teeth to move Greedo's mouth, making Greedo come to life.
