Plot summary

Years before the Inquisitors hunt down the last remaining Jedi, Cere Junda is in the Fylar region helping the Fylar Freedom Fighters slow down the Daa Corporation's advancement towards an important temple. Cere orders the Fylari to fall back with some resistence from Moroo, arguing that they need to give Neralli more time. Moroo ends up getting shot, so Cere leaps forward and knocks back a number of the Daa forces. She leaps towards the command center and uses her lightsaber to break through the roof. She lands near Dylanto Daa, who stands near some of his other commanders, and quickly holds up her lightsaber to Dylanto's face.

Cere offers Dylanto a deal to try and allow him access to the Jedi Archives, as well as convince Neralli to allow exploration of the temple, if he stops firing upon the Fylari. Dylanto is a little dubious as to whether Cere can actually get him access to the archives as non-Jedi are forbidden to access them. Dylanto then reveals that the Ontothon government no longer recognizes the Fylar region as independent anymore, so the Daa can simply walk into the temple legally. He then also reveals that they discovered that it was their own personel that attack the when the Jedi first landed on Ontotho. Though it turns out the Daa personel the corporation hired were Fylari people.

Before Cere and Dylanto can finish their conversation, a shot from a different kind of blaster hits Dylanto and kills him. The shot came from Neralli who emerges with a number of Fylari, all carrying the different kind of blaster with firepower similar to that of the statues from the temple. Neralli and the rest of the freedom fighters ignore Cere's calls for ceasefire and attack her along with the Daa forces.

The Daa commanders lose hope but the Jedi Masters Mace Windu, Luminara Unduli, Maslo-Skaff, and Odu arrive on Ontotho and help defend the Daa from the Fylari. Mace instructs Cere to go after her master with Odu's help whilst the rest of the Jedi help the Daa forces to withdraw and regroup with the Republic forces.

Cere and Odu manage to make their way into the temple and find Eno Cordova as he regains consciousness and remembers what happened to him. Before they can move, a shield enshrines the Jedi and Neralli, along with En-Threelo, reveal themselves to be the captors. Neralli reveals she and the Fylari wish to overthrow the Ontothon government and officially withdraw from the Republic to become an independent planet again. Eno confirms from Neralli that the spheres used to power the shield the Jedi are trapped in are also the ones powering the new weapons and that this resource is the reason the two sides fight over the temple. Before the Fylari leave, En-Threelo places a grenade, similar to that Cere escaped from previously, inside the energy shield.

The Fylari pair move outside to meet Fess who has loaded cannons with the energy spheres from the temple. With this new weapon, they destroy a Republic transport in the air. Back inside, the Jedi are figuring out a way out of the energy shield. Cere uses the Force on a rock outside of the energy shield and hits one of the statues. The statues react instantly and a few descend upon the shield, hitting it from all directions.

Outside and the Republic transports are firing back at the Fylari and trying to disable their new cannons. Fess notes that if one of the spheres inside the temple are hit, it could deal a huge amount of damage. Inside, the statues overwhelmed the energy shield the Jedi were stuck inside and the statues close in on the Jedi. Ready to defend themselves, one of the Republic cruiser's shots bursts through the temple ceiling and hits one of the statues, taking it out and one of the energy spheres with it.

The Jedi manage to get out of the temple as Fess is trying to convince Neralli to give up, but the latter is having none of it. Another explosion due to the chain reaction of the energy spheres occurs and sends Master Odu flying to his death. Part of the explosion also sent a large piece of rock hurtling towards the Fylari but they are saved as Cere and Eno use the Force to stop the rock and move it aside. A ship comes to pick up the Jedi, but the some of the Fylari freedom fighters choose to stay behind with the planet as the region begins to collapse.

Cere Junda is knighted by the Jedi Council

Back at the Jedi Temple, Cere and Eno enters the council room to report on their mission. Cere gives no excuses but the council comfort her, saying that not all was bad. It wasn't a victory, but the corrupt Ontotho government was being dealt with in the Republic courts and a would be taking its place. Although the mission wasn't a success, the council deem Cere worthy of becoming a full Jedi Knight.

Cere joins her old master as equals in the Jedi Library as he congratulates her on her appointment. Eno says he will focus more on the discoveries they made in the temple, and where they could possibly lead.

Years later, around 14 BBY, the Inquisitor finds a datapad that Eno had lost during the mission years ago on Ontotho. She knows they now must search for Cere and someone called Cal Kestis on Bogano, revealing the Inquisitor to be the Second Sister.
