The Krath were an ancient group who conquered the carbonite mines of the Empress Teta system thousands of years before the New Republic Era, and at some point, conquered the system itself. After their conquest, the Krath carbon-freezed the ruling Tetan monarchy. They were some of the earliest to use the carbon-freezing of individuals as a form of trophy, something that would be mimicked by gangsters, bounty hunters, and the Galactic Empire. According to the quasi-historical Qel-Droma Epics, the Krath were a dark side cult formed by the descendants of Empress Teta. The group shared its name with the Krath war droid, an ancient type of droid.
According to the quasi-historical Qel-Droma Epics, the cult was formed by corrupt noble descendants of Empress Teta a millennium after the Great Hyperspace War, empowered by Sith artifacts, and was led by Satal Keto at some point. The epics claimed Keto discovered a Sith Translation Talisman on Onderon that allowed its wearer to understand Force-imbued Sith writings, subsequently reproducing the artifact to train his fellow Krath.
After they conquered the Empress Teta system, the Krath carbon-freezed the ruling Tetan monarchy. At some point, the Galactic Republic reclaimed the system from the Krath.
The epics claimed that after taking over the Empress Teta system during a military coup, they launched a bloody crusade from their command center in the Iron Citadel against the Jedi Order. They slaughtered thousands of Jedi, including Ulic Qel-Droma's Jedi Master. Following his Master's death, Qel-Droma volunteered to infiltrate the Krath, but was corrupted by the dark side, taking over the cult alongside the fallen Jedi Exar Kun, forming a new Sith Empire with Empress Teta as it's stronghold. Qel-Droma was eventually redeemed after being cut off from the Force.
During the Imperial Era, a small minority of Tetans believed that the Iron Citadel was buried deep beneath the spires of the Royal District and served as a shrine for surviving Krath loyalists within the royal bloodline. Others believed the Republic destroyed the citadel while reclaiming the system from the Krath.
The Krath were first canonically mentioned in the 2018 reference book Star Wars: Scum and Villainy: Case Files on the Galaxy's Most Notorious. In the Star Wars Legends continuity, they were a Sith-aligned cult that briefly ruled the Empress Teta system, founded by renegade imperial family members Satal and Aleema Keto.
