Kylo Ren's division

A division of the First Order Stormtrooper Corps served under the dark warrior Kylo Ren during Ren's hunt to acquire a navigational chart that revealed the location of his uncle and former mentor, the exiled Jedi Master Luke Skywalker.

Ren tracked the map's location to the planet Takodana, and deployed the division in a full-scale attack on Maz Kanata's castle. Although Ren's troops initially secured the area, capturing the smugglers Han Solo and Chewbacca as well as the deserter FN-2187, the tide of battle turned against the First Order due to the arrival of a Resistance starfighter squadron.

By then, Ren discovered that the map's contents had been viewed by the scavenger Rey, making it no longer necessary in his mind to acquire their primary target, the astromech droid BB-8. As a result, Ren ordered the division to withdraw from Takodana, believing his interrogation of the scavenger would ultimately reveal the information he sought.

Organization

Kylo Ren's division was an infantry unit in the Stormtrooper Corps of the First Order military. It was subdivided into multiple squads of First Order stormtroopers.

The division served under the command of Ren despite his lack of an official military rank. Although Ren was not part of the First Order High Command, he nonetheless had the authority to lead the soldiers of the First Order as the dark side apprentice of Supreme Leader Snoke. The ranking stormtroopers in the division were a sergeant and an officer.

Ren's informal position in the First Order hierarchy intentionally mirrored that of his grandfather, the Sith Lord Darth Vader who likewise commanded the forces of the Galactic Empire in an unofficial capacity. This arrangement caused a considerable amount of friction between the master of the Knights of Ren and the First Order officers in the upper echelons of High Command, especially as his plans took priority over the goals of the military.

Specialization

The division had several types of specialized infantry in addition to standard troopers. Megablaster heavy assault troopers served as the division's main mobile heavy weapons personnel while stormtrooper gunners provided fire support from the atmospheric assault landers. The riot control stormtrooper was the main melee combat specialist, although standard troopers were also skilled in the art of close quarters combat.

Equipment

The troops in Ren's division wore First Order stormtrooper armor and were armed with standard-issue F-11D blaster rifles. As stormtroopers of rank, the officer and the sergeant wore a red pauldron and a black pauldron respectively.

To fulfill their respective roles within the division, specific weapons and equipment were issued to each individual member. Megablaster heavy assault troopers wielded the FWMB-10 repeating blaster; riot troopers carried a Z6 riot control baton and one riot shield; and stormtrooper gunners operated F-Z0 antipersonnel blaster cannons.

Kylo Ren's command

A division of First Order stormtroopers served under the command of Kylo Ren during the New Republic Era. A fallen apprentice of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, Ren became a warlord and champion of the First Order following his conversion to the dark side of the Force as the acolyte of Supreme Leader Snoke. Preceded by his reputation as a highly-trained lightsaber duelist who prevented the return of the Jedi Order, Ren was known by the moniker of "Jedi Killer" amongst the First Order ranks. With the First Order's resources at his disposal, Ren relentlessly hunted his former master, who disappeared into self-imposed exile after the destruction of the Jedi Temple, determined to fulfill the legacy of his grandfather Darth Vader by killing the last Jedi.

In 34 ABY, shortly after the destruction of the New Republic, the division followed Ren to the planet Takodana, having learned that the map they sought had fallen into the possession of Resistance pilot Poe Dameron's astromech droid, BB-8 which they tracked to a castle owned by Maz Kanata. During the initial battle, FN-2199 confronted his former comrade FN-2187, who deserted the First Order after witnessing the massacre of Tuanul, and challenged him to single combat. Although the trooper gained the upper hand against the deserter, FN-2199 was killed as a result of Han Solo's interference. The situation was further complicated by the arrival of a squadron of Resistance T-70 X-wing starfighters. The division requested additional troops and air support, but by then their commander encountered Rey, a Jakku scavenger who had seen the map fragment in BB-8's memory bank. As such, Ren abandoned his search for the droid and ordered his division to withdraw from Takodana, having chosen to bring the scavenger with him to Starkiller Base for interrogation.
