During the siege on Tureen VII, C-3PO was captured by SCAR Squadron. When Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo, and R2-D2 returned to the rebel fleet, they decided not to attempt a rescue mission because SCAR Squadron was deemed too dangerous. However, R2-D2 disagreed and decided to conduct a rescue mission of his own.

Once R2 arrived at the Star Destroyer C-3PO was being held at, He powered down his X-wing and pretended to be dead. After he was picked up by the Star Destroyer, R2 took out an inspection team. Upon making his way to C-3PO, R2 caused confusion on board the ship. Finally arriving at his friend's cell, R2 released him, the duo made their way to the X-wing and escaped.
As the droids made their escape, however, Darth Vader was on their tail in his ship. Luckily the pair were saved when Skywalker, along with the Millennium Falcon and the Volt Cobra, arrived, and the ships jumped to hyperspace.
