Onod I was the homeworld of the Onodone forger Gwellis Bagnoro, who was born around 17 BBY. The historian Eloc Throno eventually noted Onod I's position on a galactic map included in his book Traveler's Guide to Batuu, and by the time of the First Order occupation of the planet Batuu in 34 ABY, the pirate Hondo Ohnaka had obtained a stolen identity profile of Bagnoro that mentioned the planet.
Onod I was first featured in the Star Wars: Datapad app that launched alongside the themed land Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, which opened to guests at Disneyland Park and Disney's Hollywood Studios in 2019. The 2020 book Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: Traveler's Guide to Batuu by Cole Horton introduced a shortened version of the planet's name.
