Security scanners first appeared in "Part IV," the fourth episode of the limited Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi. They were first identified as security scanners in a Star Wars San Diego Comic-Con 2023 panel revealing information from the upcoming Star Wars Dawn of Rebellion The Visual Guide reference book, which will be released in 2023. They originated in the Legends continuity in Alan Dean Foster's 1976 novelization of the 1977 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.
