The space-snipe strategy was a military approach used in numerous planetary assault scenarios, where forces were tasked with the protection of a star system. This tactic centered on concealing starfighter outposts inside locations such as gas giants, among asteroid fields, upon planets possessing extensive oceans, or on worlds shrouded by dense cloud layers within or near the targeted planetary system. These hidden bases would then launch coordinated starfighter attacks on vulnerable ships during the orbit stage of an incoming planetary invasion.
During the battle of Gorbah, Galactic Empire naval tactician Michael Unther experienced this strategy firsthand; it resulted in the loss of at least one squadron of fighters, along with several starships, before the defending forces retreated from the system.
