Staff officer

Staff officer was a term given to military officers; whereas line officers were given command of field units, staff officers were commissioned based on their own area of specialisation. These specialist roles included scientists, doctors, laywers, and other non-combat roles. Although staff officers were fully capable officers within their field, and had all the rights and privileges of their rank, they often lacked the leadership and tactical skills of line officers.

In the Imperial Military, staff officers were present in military formations in the Imperial Army from the company level and above. These staff officers fulfilled the positions of formation second-in-command, logistics officer, medical officer, technical officer, and headquarters officer. The rank of the staff officers varied depending on the size of the formation; staff officers assigned to a company-level unit would hold the rank of lieutenant, while an equivalent staff officer in a battle group holding the rank of major.

Staff officers were also used by the Empire as positions within garrisons commands. The Major General in charge of the base was assisted by five staff officers at the rank of High Colonel. Each staff officer was assisted by a sub-staff officer with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
